Parental controls on Fire TV, Android TV and Smart TVs

Learn how device profiles, purchase PINs, content restrictions and supervised accounts work for household streaming.

Quick answer

Use both device-level and app-level controls; one setting rarely covers every service.

Streaming television can be convenient for a family, but different apps may apply different age ratings and purchasing rules. The safest setup usually combines device-level controls with settings inside the services you use.

Try this first

Work through these checks in order. Stop once the problem is resolved.

  1. 1Set appropriate household profiles and secure purchases with a PIN.
  2. 2Review individual streaming-app maturity settings.
  3. 3Test a child profile to confirm restrictions work as expected.
  4. 4Recheck settings after adding new apps or users.

Start with household profiles

Where supported, create separate profiles for children and adults. Check whether profiles genuinely restrict mature content or merely personalise recommendations. A child profile on one app will not automatically restrict every other app installed on the television.

Secure purchases and account changes

Enable a PIN for purchases and app installation where available. Review saved payment methods and whether purchases can be made by anyone holding the remote. Where a streaming device is shared, avoid leaving unrestricted administrator accounts open on the home screen.

Review each streaming app separately

Many apps have their own viewing profiles, maturity ratings and playback restrictions. Compare those controls with the device’s system settings, and test the child experience yourself. Automatic recommendations, adverts and user-generated content may work differently between services.

Keep controls updated and communicate

Install official software updates, revisit settings after adding new apps and talk to younger viewers about unfamiliar links or requests for account details. Technical controls are helpful but cannot replace age-appropriate guidance and supervision. If restrictions stop working, use the device manufacturer’s current support documentation.

Worth knowing

Recommendation feeds and browser apps may need separate controls.

Frequently asked questions

Do parental controls carry across all devices?
Usually not. Each operating system and app may need separate settings.
Can children bypass age profiles?
Some profiles are convenience features rather than strong access controls, so test the restrictions and secure adult access with a PIN.
