IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television. It describes television delivered using internet protocol networks rather than only a traditional aerial, satellite dish or cable connection. The term refers to the technology — not to a particular provider or set of channels.
How IPTV works
A provider delivers video to a compatible device using an internet connection and supported software. Viewers may watch scheduled programmes, select content on demand or use a combination of both, depending on the service.
Some services use managed networks while others work through the wider internet. The quality of the experience can depend on your connection, the app and the device, as well as the service itself.
Live TV and on-demand are different
Live television follows a broadcast schedule. On-demand content is selected from an available library. Different apps and accounts can have very different rules for which programmes can be watched, on how many screens and in which locations.
What equipment do you need?
Most viewers need a reliable broadband connection, a supported device and a genuine application or playback method approved by the service. A compatible Smart TV, connected box, Fire TV device, phone, tablet or computer may be sufficient.
Check exact device support rather than assuming that every model from the same manufacturer will work. Older devices might have limited storage or no longer receive important updates.
What affects playback quality?
Resolution is only one factor. Consistent playback depends on network stability, Wi-Fi signal, video format support, app performance and the provider's capacity. A wired Ethernet connection may help where compatible and practical.
Questions worth asking a provider
- What content is included and does the provider have the required rights to supply it?
- Which devices and operating-system versions are supported?
- How many simultaneous screens are included?
- What are the full prices, renewal conditions and cancellation rules?
- What support is available for sign-in or playback problems?
