Check batteries, device power and pairing before ordering a replacement remote.
Before buying a replacement remote, work out whether the problem is the remote, the streaming device or a power issue. The TV switching on does not necessarily mean the Fire TV itself has finished starting.
Try this first
Work through these checks in order. Stop once the problem is resolved.
- 1Fit fresh batteries and restart the Fire TV.
- 2Check whether TV volume works but device navigation does not.
- 3Use the manufacturer’s pairing steps for your remote model.
- 4If needed, check whether a compatible phone remote app can navigate the device.
Start with power and batteries
Replace or properly reseat the batteries and clean visible battery contacts gently with a dry cloth. Check that the Fire TV has its own reliable power source. If the picture on screen has frozen, the remote may be fine while the device has stopped responding.
Try the simplest connection test
Move close to the TV and press Home. Some remotes use Bluetooth for navigation and infrared only for certain TV controls, so volume working does not prove that navigation is paired. Restart the Fire TV and wait for the home screen before testing again.
Pair the remote using the correct model instructions
Pairing combinations vary by remote generation. Amazon’s current help page for your specific remote is safer than following a random button sequence. If you can navigate using a compatible Fire TV remote app on a phone connected to the same network, check settings before purchasing a new remote.
When to replace the remote
If fresh batteries, restarting, and correct pairing do not work, check whether a different compatible remote can operate the Fire TV. Confirm the model number before buying; remotes that look alike are not always interchangeable. Avoid third-party apps requesting unusual account permissions.
Remote generations look similar but may require different pairing or have different compatibility.
