How to choose a streaming device for your TV in the UK

Compare key features of streaming sticks, Smart TV apps and TV boxes: app support, updates, Wi-Fi, storage and accessibility.

Quick answer

Choose based on official app support and usability first; 4K labels come second.

A new streaming device can make an older TV easier to use, but the most expensive model is not necessarily the best for your household. Compatibility with the apps you intend to use matters more than marketing labels.

Try this first

Work through these checks in order. Stop once the problem is resolved.

  1. 1List the apps and accessibility features you need.
  2. 2Check the manufacturer’s current device support.
  3. 3Match resolution, HDR and audio formats to the television.
  4. 4Compare software update support, remote controls and connectivity.

Check apps before looking at specifications

Write down the services you actually use and check their current supported-device lists. A device with a high-end processor is not useful if the relevant app is missing. Some services also have different features across platforms, including downloads, casting or subtitle options.

Match picture and sound to the whole setup

If you want 4K and HDR, the device, television, HDMI input, cables and streaming plan must all support the relevant formats. If your television only displays 1080p, a more costly 4K box may still offer a faster interface, but it cannot turn the panel into 4K.

Consider comfort, support and household needs

Look at remote-control simplicity, accessibility settings, parental controls, app-store safety and the manufacturer’s history of software updates. Older TVs can have very little memory, so a current supported external device may run apps more smoothly than the built-in TV system.

Compare total cost and connectivity

Check whether an ethernet adapter is available, how far the device will sit from the router, the power supply needed and any paid app costs. Prefer well-supported products sold through reputable retailers with clear return terms.

Worth knowing

Do not buy a device solely because a seller claims it contains every television channel.

Frequently asked questions

Will a streaming stick work with any TV?
The television generally needs a compatible HDMI input and power arrangement, but check your exact model and device requirements.
Should I buy the fastest streaming box?
Not necessarily. Official app availability, usability and software support usually matter more for typical viewing.
