TV audio out of sync when streaming: how to fix lip-sync delay

Diagnose delayed dialogue on Smart TV apps, soundbars and HDMI-connected streaming devices with simple comparisons.

Quick answer

Identify whether lips move before or after sound, and whether the issue affects every app.

If voices no longer match the movement of lips, the delay can come from the app, the streaming device, the television’s picture processing or an external sound system.

Try this first

Work through these checks in order. Stop once the problem is resolved.

  1. 1Try the TV speakers without the soundbar first.
  2. 2Test a second programme and a second app.
  3. 3Check TV and soundbar audio-delay settings; change one adjustment at a time.
  4. 4If only one app is affected, restart/update that app rather than resetting the whole TV.

Start with a simple comparison

Check whether the delay happens in one streaming app, every app or even regular TV menus and clips. Play a short video using TV speakers, then try the same clip through your soundbar or receiver. This comparison can identify whether the problem is linked to the sound system rather than the content.

Understand audio delay settings

Many televisions and sound systems include an audio sync, AV sync or lip-sync adjustment. These settings can help align audio that arrives too early or too late, but they are not a cure for intermittent skipping. Note the original value before making changes and adjust in small steps.

Check connected hardware

If you use HDMI ARC or eARC, confirm that the cable is connected to the correct port and that the TV and soundbar software is current. Try another audio format where the manufacturer recommends it, and compare Bluetooth with wired audio. Bluetooth speakers can introduce noticeable delay on some devices.

Avoid masking a bigger fault

When sound drifts progressively during playback, the app or source may be malfunctioning. Restart and update the affected application. If only a particular programme is affected, the source may be at fault. Record the exact device combination and symptom before asking support for help.

Worth knowing

Bluetooth audio introduces additional delay on some devices; check the connection type.

Frequently asked questions

Can a soundbar cause lip-sync issues?
Yes. Processing and connection methods can add delay, though the television or app may also be responsible.
Should I change settings on every app?
Only when the problem is app-specific; begin by testing where the delay actually occurs.
