Fire TV Stick not connecting to Wi-Fi: fixes in the right order

Fix a Fire TV Stick that cannot connect to Wi-Fi. Check passwords, router issues, signal strength and system updates without wiping your setup.

Quick answer

Identify whether the network is missing, the password fails, or internet access is absent.

A Fire TV device might see your network but fail to join it, connect without internet access, or disconnect only during playback. Those symptoms point to different fixes. Identify the one you have before changing every setting on the TV.

Try this first

Work through these checks in order. Stop once the problem is resolved.

  1. 1Test the same network with a phone at the TV.
  2. 2Restart Fire TV and confirm it has adequate power.
  3. 3Verify the Wi-Fi password and try closer to the router.
  4. 4If the network connects but no apps load, check broadband status.

First identify the exact Wi-Fi failure

If your network is missing altogether, check whether nearby phones can see it and whether the Fire TV supports the router’s wireless band. If the network is visible but the password is rejected, re-enter it carefully and verify the password on another device. If Fire TV says it is connected but apps will not load, the fault may be with your broadband or DNS rather than Wi-Fi pairing.

Restart in a controlled order

Restart the streaming stick from its Settings menu where possible, then restart the router if other devices are also affected. Wait until the router is fully online before retrying. Use the device’s recommended power adapter rather than relying on an underpowered USB port on the television, which can cause intermittent behaviour.

Check signal strength at the television

A phone showing full Wi-Fi signal beside the router says little about the connection behind a wall-mounted TV. Try moving the Fire TV away from the TV’s metal housing using the HDMI extender if supplied. Test from another room or closer to the router to identify signal or interference problems. Avoid changing advanced router security modes as a first step.

Update and escalate appropriately

Once connected, check for a Fire TV software update. If the network works on every other device but Fire TV still fails, consult Amazon’s help pages for your exact model. Do not factory-reset until you know your account sign-in details and have exhausted simpler tests; a reset removes local settings and installed apps.

Worth knowing

Do not perform a factory reset before trying ordinary connection checks.

Frequently asked questions

Why does it connect but say no internet?
The local Wi-Fi link may work even when the broadband connection is down. Check another device and your provider’s service status.
Will a factory reset fix it?
Sometimes, but it is a last resort because it removes your app and account setup.
